Science
Intent
At Marsh Hill Primary, our intent for the Science curriculum is to foster a sense of curiosity and wonder among our students about the natural world. Our pupils have big dreams, ambitious goals, exciting aspirations. They plan their adult life at the age of 5 years old, when they decide they want to be a doctor when they grow up. They may also aspire to be a pharmacist, an astronaut or an archaeologist. In order to facilitate these goals, we treat our pupils as skilled scientists when we immerse them in their Science lessons. We aim to instil confidence and inspire future scientists, and that begins when they start to develop their understanding about the world around them when they are in the Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception). Pupils in EYFS work towards being an "Exceptional Explorer" through planned adult led activities and child initiated activities in the continuous provision.
We aim to provide a comprehensive grounding in scientific knowledge and principles, while also encouraging our young learners to develop their investigative skills. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and engaging, ensuring that every child is equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in their scientific learning and beyond.
Implementation
Implementation of our Science curriculum is achieved through a blend of theoretical learning and practical experiments, making use of the latest educational resources, including Twinkl PlanIt. This comprehensive scheme supports our teachers by providing them with well-structured, age-appropriate lesson plans that cover all the key areas of the science curriculum. By integrating these resources, we ensure that our lessons are dynamic and effectively scaffolded, allowing children of all abilities to achieve their potential in science.
The teaching and learning of Science puts the learner at the heart of the process. During lessons, pupils will explore and record their initial ideas at the beginning of each unit. They will then participate in rich learning experiences to help them develop their understanding of science ideas and concepts. This includes working scientifically (as scientists), when they are enabled to develop skills such as: predicting, observing, classifying, recording, interpreting and evaluating.
Each year, we also take part in British Science Week, when every child at Marsh Hill gets involved with the focus topic. Budding scientists continue to flourish!
Impact
The Impact of our science education is evident in the enthusiasm and competence our students display in understanding and applying scientific concepts. We assess progress not just through traditional testing, but also by observing the application of skills in practical settings, ensuring a deep understanding and lasting retention of scientific knowledge. At Marsh Hill Primary, we are committed to preparing our students not only for the next stages of their education but also for a lifelong appreciation and understanding of the science that shapes our world.
